The conservation approach assures ceramic repairs and ceramic restorations cause no further harm as much as is possible to in the completion of the ceramics taken for repair. This is an example of a more aggressive approach to restoration by actual scraping groves, or "teeth" into the body of the piece.
This piece arrived with this description:
The Royal Doulton MADRAS jug "has no cracks but there are three chips. There is a small one on the side of the rim, one under the spout and another small one on the base. The chips have been scored like they were being prepared to be restored. There is some staining on the inside of the pitcher." This used to be a common method of "ceramic restoration".
The pictures below attempt to show the condition at the beginning and the steps through to full correction. First by cleaning, then filling, then smoothing the fill and then the color to finish.
